During the Inca empire, alpaca was only used by royalty because it was valued as the finest material. Alpaca is supple and smooth to the touch. It’s softer than cashmere and warmer and stronger than lamb’s wool. It contains microscopic air pockets which create lightweight clothing with excellent insulating properties. It is a completely natural fiber and there is no use of harsh chemicals in production. The alpaca live mostly without any boundaries in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes and are not harmed during the shearing process. Their soft padded feet are gentle on the grass terrain and they graze without destroying the root system of the area. Alpaca is the only animal that produces up to 28 natural colors and can be blended into an infinite array of natural shades from inky black to warm chestnuts and snowy white. It is easily dyed in any color and always retains its natural luster.

Slate & Salt - Navy Handloom Cashmere Scarf - 1 COLOR - $120.00
Wrap yourself in cashmere! This oversized cashmere scarf is large enough to be worn as a wrap and is the perfect accessory for layering on cold evenings. It is made from Grade A Himalayan cashmere, making it extra soft against your skin. These unisex, timeless scarves make great gifts and carry a story you can feel good about! Material: 100% Handloomed Himalayan Cashmere Measurements: L 79" x W 26" Handmade with love in Nepal. Care: Dry clean or hand wash cold and lay flat to dry. Because of the hand-loomed nature of these scarves, each is one-of-a-kind and completely unique. There are slight variations in colors and patterns. Artisan Profile Nepal/Tibetan Himalayan cashmere is renowned as some of the softest cashmere in the world. Cashmere is extremely light and luxuriously soft yet keeps you extremely warm. Cashmere comes from the softest undercoat of a goat and it takes an average of three goats wool to make one scarf! All of our cashmere scarves and throws are handloomed in Pokhara Nepal by blind, deaf, or disabled weavers. We partner with a local non-profit organization that provides them with the tools, training, and support necessary to become independent through weaving. In Nepal, the disabled are discriminated against in mainstream society. They have little or no opportunities for work. Weaving allows them to enjoy an independent life, increases their self-esteem and also improves the way they are treated by their family. The organization further gives back to the disabled community by donating white canes, hearing aids and wheel-chairs, providing food, medicine and essential goods for aged-care homes, helping the poor and distributing relief to earthquake and landslide victims. With such a great cause, these are our most favorite pieces!
Slate & Salt - White Khmer Silk Scarf - 1 COLOR - $98.00
These classic silk scarves never go out of style. They are elegantly lightweight and large enough to be worn as a scarf or a wrap. Traditionally handloomed by a women’s weaving cooperative and made from 100% Khmer (Cambodian) silk and non-toxic dyes. Material: 100% Khmer Silk Measurements: L 66" x W 33" Handmade with love in Cambodia As with all handcrafted goods, there are slight variations making each piece a work of art and truly one of a kind. Care: Hand wash with gentle detergent. Do not iron or steam. Artisan Profile   The Cambodia women’s silk weaving cooperative is located in the Takeo Province, a rural, low income area. They employ over 500 weavers from 7 villages. The silk is also produced locally by 350 farmers who grow mulberry trees which rear cocoons from silk worms. The cocoons are spun into silk thread and eventually handloomed into these elegant works of art.   The goal of this social enterprise is to prevent the ancient Cambodian silk weaving tradition from vanishing, while empowering women and contributing to the economic development of more isolated areas. The complex art of silk weaving is a dying ancient tradition but the weaving cooperative trains younger generations to keep it alive. They provide employment opportunities and training for women living in the area who would otherwise be forced to flee to neighboring countries in search of jobs. There, separated from their families and lacking education, they often fall into dangerous situations such as human trafficking, sexual abuse or hard work conditions. By joining the weaving cooperative, the women become financially independent and can work from home so they can care for their children at the same time.
